Our Mission

Portland Meet Portland (PMP) creates opportunities for cross-cultural learning and friendship among longer-term residents of Portland and the city’s more recent immigrants and refugees. Much of our work is done through storytelling and story sharing, deliberately cultivated in highly diverse neighborhoods. We especially encourage youth leadership. In our work, youth and young adults are not just storytellers, but also interviewers and organizers.

The impacts of PMP’s work are seen in friendships formed, enhanced trust within communities, and increased understanding of issues that bridge races, cultures and ethnicities.

HISTORY

Portland Meet Portland is a non-profit started in 2014 by Susi Steinmann and Kay Reid to highlight the beautiful assets that diverse immigrants and refugees bring to their new homes here in Oregon and the meaningful gifts that those already living here have to offer them. It also seeks to bond in friendship with those estranged in their own communities. Portland Meet Portland creates ways to connect people that have the potential to bring joy and peace to all of us who call Portland home.

Portland Meet Portland works collaboratively to build cross-cultural communities that not only survive but thrive and celebrate together. We do this one person or one family at a time, with an emphasis on storytelling, story sharing, and friendship.
